The Citizens Information Board's participation in social policy and research arises from its functions as set out in the Comhairle Act 2000.

The Citizens Information Board produces a wide variety of online and printed publications to support the provision of information. These publications include leaflets, reports and wallcharts.

The Citizens Information Board, as Comhairle, became subject to the legislation from 1 October 2001. The Freedom of Information Act 2014 imposes various duties on public bodies and certain other bodies which are subject to its records.

The Citizens Information Board organises its work into four main divisions and 12 service teams; Compliance and Reporting division; Corporate Services division; ICT, Digital and Data division; Standards and Development division.
